HOW TO USE BARK MULCH

Bark mulch is laid on soil around trees, bushes, roses or perennial flower beds. The soil must be previously cleared of weeds. Bark mulch must not be spread on totally dry soil. The use of water permeable bed covering under the mulch layer will guarantee an especially long-term and carefree result. Although bark mulch does not protect from dandelions and other taproot weeds, the latter are easy dug out from the mulch layer.

Depending on the size of bark pieces and the plants mulched, the recommendable thickness of the mulch layer is 510 cm. The mulch layer should be thinner rather than too thick. A thick mulch layer, especially when the material is very fine, will impair ventilation in the soil and, as a result, the plant may wilt.

In order to prevent the spread of plant pests and diseases, we recommend that you renew the upper layer of the mulch (45 cm) every spring (at least every 2 to 3 years). Before the mulch is annually renewed, the upper layer of the last year’s mulch should be removed. When spreading mulch around plants, it is important to ensure that 15 cm around the plant’s root crown remains uncovered. This will guarantee normal ventilation for the plant and will avoid plant rot. As a rule, the mulch layer must not touch the plant stem. The use of bark mulch may (but not necessarily) cause slight lack of nitrogen with plants, because bark that generally lacks nitrogen absorbs plant nutrients from the soil. To treat or prevent lack of nitrogen, it is recommended to fertilize the plants.

Improperly applied mulch puts plants at risk of death.

Mulches that compost faster than bark are more suitable for vegetable gardens, because vegetables grow fast and gardens are completely renewed every year.

CONSUMPTION OF BARK MULCH

One cubic metre or 1000 l of bark covers an area of 15–18 square metres with the thickness of 50–75 mm. In case of different plants the thickness of the mulch layer may vary.

A package of 80 l is sufficient for the first covering of an area of ca 1.2–1.5 m2. For annual renewing of the mulch layer, less bark is consumed.

EXPERIENCE

We have received good feedback from horticulturists, who have been using our bark for years, e.g. Kaunimad Aiad (Beautiful Gardens) Ltd. They agree that pine bark mulch makes any garden look better. We consider their opinion when improving our products.

Our employers have also been using pine bark mulch in their home gardens for years. We will share our experience and knowledge with you with utmost pleasure.
